Healthy Diet
While Alzheimer’s is sometimes referred to as “diabetes of the brain,” research shows that many things can be done to reduce your risk. These include a healthy diet, lower stress levels, regular physical activity and maintaining a normal weight.
Exercise Regularly
Studies show that people who exercise regularly have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. Plus, the exercise helps to keep the brain healthy and can relieve agitation.
Exercise can also help with other health issues that are associated with Alzheimer’s, such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
Get Enough Sleep
Many people with Alzheimer’s experience sleep problems such as waking up frequently or having trouble falling asleep. Scientists don’t know why this happens but they think it’s linked to changes in the brain that affect the sleep-wake cycle.
Getting enough deep sleep can help prevent early Alzheimer’s, researchers say. That’s because deep sleep can slow the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaque and tau tangles, which are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.
Blood Pressure
Taking steps to lower your risk for heart disease is one of the best ways to reduce your chances of getting Alzheimer’s. In fact, one study found that managing blood pressure in middle age can cut your chances of Alzheimer’s by half.
